What is Food Connect?

Food Connect is a European initiative aimed at tackling the escalating food waste crisis in Southern EU countries by promoting sustainable practices throughout the food supply chain, from production to consumption. The project seeks to expand and improve the LIFE-funded “Collaboration Network platform,” making it smarter, more user-friendly, and widely accessible, while testing its implementation in Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus. By introducing innovative tools and encouraging local adaptation, Food Connect aims to enhance food donation systems and establish a sustainable food network in the region.

The initiative unites a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from the food and hospitality industries, scientific experts, NGOs, and policymakers. Together, they work to foster collaboration, create customized solutions, and address shortcomings in food donation practices. Beyond reducing food waste, Food Connect also tackles critical social issues such as food insecurity, poverty, and environmental harm by ensuring surplus food is redirected to those in need rather than being wasted.
